The Establishment of the Arizona Territory (CSA)


Date: August 1, 1861
Location: Mesilla, Confederate-occupied New Mexico Territory
 

Following the Union defeats at Mesilla, Fort Fillmore, and San Augustin Spring, the Confederates celebrated, and on August 1st, established the Arizona Territory, a Confederate domain consisting of the southern halves of the modern-day Arizona and New Mexico.

With Colonel John R. Baylor as Governor, and Mesilla as its capital, the Arizona Territory would soon be sending delegates to the Confederate States Congress.

In early 1862, the proposal to organize the Arizona Territory as an official part of the Confederacy was passed by the Confederate States Congress and approved by Confederate President Jefferson Davis on February 14, 1862.
